Ben Coats started Happy Paws Veterinary Partners in 2023 with the hope of bringing more happiness into the veterinary workplace. Prior to Happy Paws, Ben served as the CFO for Ascend Software, a company specializing in accounts payable automation software. Before that, he held the position of CFO at Berkh Uul, a mining company in Mongolia, where he discovered a newfound appreciation for horses’ milk. Ben also spent time as a corporate attorney, gaining insights into the importance of work-life balance.
Ben’s love for the outdoors knows no bounds. He backpacked the entire 2,650-mile length of the Pacific Crest Trail, stretching from Mexico to Canada. Additionally, he completed the entire Oregon Coast Trail and explored the rugged terrain of Bulgaria along the Kom Emine trail. Beyond hiking, Ben enjoys skiing, scuba diving, birdwatching, reading, and playing chess.
Originally from Idaho, Ben has lived in 6 different states within the United States and 3 foreign countries, accumulating a wealth of experiences. His educational journey includes a BA from BYU, a Juris Doctor from Columbia University, and an MBA from Harvard University.
For over the past decade, Eric has worked in the veterinary industry to help support hospitals across the country. Based in North Texas, Eric built extensive experience acquiring veterinary hospitals and assisting their team’s integration.
Proud Husband and Father, Eric and his family own a small farm where they love to spend time enjoying the outdoors. Eric has a Great Dane and a Chihuahua and is also a keeper to several colonies of honeybees.”
Dr. Jeff King serves as the Owner and Chief Medical Officer at Happy Paws, where his unwavering commitment to promoting a high standard in veterinary excellence shines through. With over forty years of experience, Dr. King’s journey has been diverse and impactful.
Education and Expertise: Dr. King received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from Washington State University in 1994. His background extends beyond veterinary medicine, encompassing human nursing, wildlife biology, and disease research. His dedication to lifelong learning ensures that he stays at the forefront of advancements in animal care. Dr. King’s passion for patient well-being drives him to exceed expectations. His proficiency in performing ultrasound examinations on companion animals reflects his commitment to precision and compassion.
Beyond the Clinic: When not caring for four-legged patients, Dr. King spreads his wings—literally! He’s an avid falconer, practicing the ancient Art and Sport of Falconry. Additionally, he’s a licensed pilot, navigating the skies in his own airplane. At home, he shares life’s adventures with his partner, Bonnie Marsh, a registered nurse, and their two adult children. Their household includes Jackie, the spirited English Pointer, and Karma, the mischievous long-haired feline.

As a retired Army veteran with over 18 years of service, my journey has been diverse—from various Army roles to leadership in the manufacturing world. But through it all, my true north has remained constant: my love for people.
Early in my Army career, I discovered my purpose: to lead by serving others. It wasn’t about titles; it was about understanding the individuals in my charge, learning from them, and creating a path to success together. Whether in uniform or beyond, I’ve remained committed to this principle: People first. Always!
Whether in my role as a recruiter or a friend, I’m present. I listen, coach, and mentor. There is no other feeling in the world that can be had when you have weathered the storms, faced doubts, and pushed through obstacles just to witness the sweet taste of victory after a long hard-fought journey!! To see that joy in others and how it impacts their life is simply priceless!! My goal is to help so many accomplish which they set out to in this lifetime! Helping them believe and achieve!!
Proud husband and father of four has taught me that life’s greatest joys come from lifting others up. My family—my wife’s unwavering support, my children’s laughter, their milestones—fuels my purpose in life! We also have 2 French Bulldogs that we cherish and that just melt any stress away! We love to travel and are a big sports family!! We love movies and of course being Italian, HUGE Foodies!
